He grew up in a household headed by his father, John Morrison, who worked as a policeman and later served briefly as a mayor, and his mother, Marion Morrison, who was employed in administrative work. He has an older brother, Alan. Morrison attended Sydney Boys High School and went on to study at the University of New South Wales, where he completed honours studies in applied economic geography.
As a youth he worked in front of the camera, appearing in television commercials. Outside of politics he has interests that include reading and kayaking. He is married to Jennifer Morrison, his high-school girlfriend; they began dating as teenagers and married in 1990. The couple have two daughters, Lily and Abbey, and a pet cat named Charlie.
Career
Morrison’s early professional experience combined public policy and tourism. From 1989 to 1995 he was National Policy and Research Manager for the Property Council of Australia. He later served as Deputy Chief Executive of the Australian Tourism Task Force and spent time working in New Zealand as director of Tourism and Sport, where he was involved with the “100% Pure New Zealand” campaign.
In April 2000 he returned to Australia to become State Director of the Liberal Party, overseeing party campaigns in the 2001 federal election and the 2003 state election. In 2004 Morrison became the inaugural Managing Director of Tourism Australia. He left that role amid a high-profile dispute in 2006.
Morrison moved into federal politics when he sought preselection for the Division of Cook. After initial preselection events in 2007 he was chosen to contest the seat and later advanced through roles in the federal government. By 2008 he was serving as the party spokesman on housing and local government. In 2014 he was appointed Minister for Social Services, and in 2015 he was elevated to Treasurer in the Turnbull government.
On 15 February 2011 Morrison drew public attention when he spoke about support for relatives of victims of the Christmas Island boat disaster, later saying his timing had been insensitive after receiving criticism. On 18 September 2013 he launched Operation Sovereign Borders, a government initiative targeting unauthorised maritime arrivals.
In August 2018 Morrison was selected as leader of the Liberal Party and became the 30th Prime Minister of Australia following the removal of Malcolm Turnbull. During his prime ministership he retained a public profile that included occasional light-hearted moments, such as acting as a water carrier during a practice cricket match at Manuka Oval in October 2019.

Controversies and public reactions have arisen at several points in Morrison’s career. His tenure at Tourism Australia ended amid conflict with the tourism minister at the time, and his public comments following the Christmas Island tragedy prompted criticism and an apology for poor timing.
