Early life and backgroundSeema Deo was born Nalini Saraf on 27 March 1942 in Girgaon, Mumbai. Raised in that neighbourhood, she entered the performing arts while still young — partly from the need to support her family during a difficult financial period. On the recommendation of her brother she adopted the screen name Seema for her professional career.
Career
Deo began as a theatre performer in both Hindi and Marathi plays. Her first credited film appearance came in Marathi cinema in 1960 with Jagachya Pathivar, and she made her Hindi film debut the same year playing Rajni in Miya Bibi Razi. An important early break came when director Bimal Roy, impressed by her Marathi work and its connection to director Raja Paranjpe, cast her opposite established stars in a major Hindi production.
Across a career that spanned decades she worked predominantly as a character actor in Marathi and Hindi films. Her filmography includes titles such as Dus Lakh (1966), Saraswatichandra (1968), Anand (1971), Naseeb Apna Apna (1986) and Sansar (1987). Her last listed film role was in the Marathi feature Jetaa (2010), in which she played Sumati Yashwant Rajadhyaksha. Over the years she appeared in more than eighty films.
Deo received formal dance training at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Mumbai, where she trained alongside peers including Asha Parekh. In 1971 she and her husband launched a production company, Ramesh Deo Production (RDP), expanding their involvement in the industry beyond acting.
Public profile
Seema Deo married fellow actor Ramesh Deo on 1 July 1963 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The couple often worked together on screen. They had two sons: Ajinkya Deo, who followed his parents into acting, and Abhinay Deo, who became a film director. Seema was identified with the Goud Saraswat Brahmin community and cited Nutan and the film Sujata (1959) among her favourites.
Her work was recognized with awards during her career, including a National Award in 1987 and the Raja Paranjape Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
