She grew up in a sporting household and began competing in school athletics at an early age, initially taking part in hurdling and later moving into long jump before finding her primary calling in the throwing events. Her father, Vijay Pal Singh, encouraged her athletic pursuits from childhood.

Career
Seema Punia emerged on the international scene as a junior, and early success included a podium finish at the World Junior Championships. Over the following decades she established herself as one of India’s most consistent women discus throwers, competing across multiple editions of the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the Olympic Games.
Her Commonwealth Games medal haul spans four editions: silver at Melbourne 2006, bronze at Delhi 2010, silver at Glasgow 2014 and silver at Gold Coast 2018. At the Asian Games she won gold in Incheon in 2014 and followed with a bronze medal at Jakarta-Palembang in 2018. At junior level she captured a bronze at the 2002 World Junior Championships in Kingston.
Punia has been coached by Ankush Punia and Vitaliy Pishchalnikov. She has also transitioned into roles beyond competition: she joined the Haryana Police in 2010 as a sub-inspector and has spoken publicly about challenges she faced in obtaining job security and promotion within sports and service structures.
Her international career continued into the Tokyo Olympic cycle: she represented India in discus at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which took place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
