Seema Samridhi Kushwaha (Nirbhaya's Lawyer) Biography

Seema Samridhi Kushwaha is an Indian lawyer and politician known for representing victims in high‑profile sexual violence cases, most notably the Nirbhaya

Early life and background

Seema Samridhi Kushwaha was born on 2 October 1986 in Ugrapur, a small village in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in a conservative household as the youngest of seven children, with two elder brothers and four sisters. Her father, Baladin Kushwaha, served as Gram Pradhan of Bidhipur Gram Panchayat, and her mother, Ramkuanri Kushwaha, was a homemaker. From an early age she confronted social attitudes that limited girls’ opportunities; family and community resistance marked much of her childhood and schooling.

Kushwaha’s formal education began at Kalavati Rampyari School in Lakhna town. She persisted through long walks and difficult conditions to continue her studies beyond the eighth grade—becoming the first girl from her village to do so—and later completed professional and postgraduate studies. Her academic record includes a law degree in 2005 from Kanpur University, a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2006, and a master’s degree in political science in 2008. She also attended Ajitmal PG College, Rajarshi Tandon Open University, and the University of Delhi at various stages of her education.

Early career and struggles

Kushwaha began practising law in the mid‑2000s and spent time working in the Allahabad High Court. Financial constraints shaped much of her early adult life: she took on teaching work, sold personal jewellery to pay college fees, and lived away from home to pursue higher studies. At one point she prepared for civil service exams and lived in a PG in Mukherjee Nagar while preparing for the UPSC. She has described facing gender bias within the legal profession in smaller cities, where women lawyers often struggled to secure hearings or professional respect.

Career

Seema Kushwaha is an advocate who practises in the Supreme Court of India and is most widely known for her legal work on cases of sexual violence. The Delhi gang‑rape case of December 2012, commonly called the Nirbhaya case, was the first matter she took on. Deeply moved by the crime and its aftermath, she abandoned her civil service ambitions to assist the victim’s parents and became actively engaged in the legal and public campaign for justice. In January 2014 she joined the Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust as a legal advisor, an organization that supports survivors of violence with shelter and legal assistance.

She spent seven years working on the Nirbhaya case in various capacities; the legal process culminated with the execution of four convicts on 20 March 2020. Kushwaha has said she did not accept fees for taking up the Nirbhaya matter. Following that judgment, she reported receiving threats but continued to represent other victims of gender‑based crimes.

Beyond the Nirbhaya case, Kushwaha has represented victims in other high‑profile matters, including the Hathras gang‑rape case in 2020. She has also taken up cases alleging custodial abuse, such as the matter of a businessman who died after an encounter with police in Gorakhpur. After the Nirbhaya judgment she told interviewers that she was handling many harassment cases and receiving large numbers of messages from people seeking legal help; she expressed a commitment to continuing campaigns against gender crimes and to assisting those who have not found justice.

Public profile

Kushwaha’s work has included public protest and advocacy in addition to courtroom representation. She has participated in public demonstrations and organized gatherings in memory of victims to keep attention on the need for accountability and support for survivors. Her profile rose considerably after the Nirbhaya case, and she has used that visibility to bring other instances of alleged abuse to public and legal attention.

Politics

In January 2022 Kushwaha entered active politics by joining the Bahujan Samaj Party ahead of elections in Uttar Pradesh. In March 2024 she left the BSP and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. She has described her political involvement as part of a broader effort to seek justice for weaker sections of society.

Latest updates

Seema Kushwaha continues to practise law and engage in public advocacy on issues of sexual violence and custodial abuse. She remains based in New Delhi, and her professional identity combines courtroom work, public protest, and political activity.
