Shafali Verma Biography

A prodigious right-handed batter from Rohtak, Haryana, Shafali Verma rose quickly through domestic cricket to become one of India’s most talked-about young

Early life and background

Shafali Verma was born on 28 January 2004 in Rohtak, Haryana. She grew up in a family with strong sporting encouragement from her father, Sanjeev Verma, who coached her during her earliest years on the local grounds. Her mother is Praveen Bala and she has a brother named Sahil Verma. Shafali attended Mandeep Senior Secondary School in Rohtak and was completing her secondary education while launching her cricket career.

Shafali began playing cricket at around eight years old. Early in her development she sometimes faced resistance from boys who were reluctant to play with a girl; she adapted and persevered, practicing with boys and girls and developing the power-hitting that later became her trademark. As a child she idolized Sachin Tendulkar, an inspiration she has frequently cited for taking up the game.

Career

Verma is a right-handed batter who also bowls right-arm offbreak. She developed through local clubs in Rohtak and joined Ram Narayan Cricket Club in 2016, where her ability quickly earned her promotion to the elite group training with under-19, under-23 and Ranji Trophy players. Her coach, Ashwani Kumar, noted that she displayed a level of stroke-making at a very young age that usually appears later in a player’s development.

She captained the Haryana women’s under-19 side in 2018. At 15 she received her first call-up to India’s women’s T20 international squad for the series against South Africa. Shafali made her WT20I debut on 24 September 2019 against South Africa at 15 years and 239 days, becoming the youngest woman to represent India in a T20 international.

Soon after her international debut she set a new milestone for young Indian players by scoring her maiden international fifty — a 73 from 49 balls in a T20 match against the West Indies — breaking a long-standing age-related record. Her aggressive batting and ability to clear the ropes helped her earn a spot in India’s 15-player squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

Verma made her Test debut on 16 June 2021 against England and her One Day International debut on 27 June 2021 against England. She wears jersey number 17 for India and represents Haryana domestically. In franchise cricket, she was acquired by Delhi Capitals in February 2023 during the inaugural Women’s Premier League auction.

In January 2023 she captained the Indian team that won the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, a significant leadership milestone in her young career. Later, at the 2026 T20 World Cup, she recorded a fifty against the Netherlands, scoring 55 off 38 balls and also contributing with the ball by taking three wickets for 20 runs.

Public profile

Shafali’s playing style is characterized by powerful, front-foot stroke-making; her favourite scoring areas include the straight drive and going on the front foot to step out and hit. She has been coached by Ashwani Kumar through much of her formative cricketing years.

Physically she stands about 162 cm (1.62 m) tall, or approximately 5 feet 4 inches. She has black eyes and black hair. Her preferred shirt number for India is 17.

Latest updates

In February 2023 she was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 2 crore at the WPL auction. In 2026 she registered an all-round performance in the T20 World Cup match against the Netherlands, posting a fifty and taking three wickets.

Personal notes

Shafali continues to credit her father for much of her early development and support. She has said that watching and attempting to meet her childhood hero, Sachin Tendulkar, as a young fan helped inspire her ambitions.
