Early life and backgroundShafqat Cheema was born on 20 November 1955 in Lahore, Pakistan. Raised in a family with a religious background—his father, Muazzam, was an Aalim—Cheema studied at Jamia Naeemia Lahore. He practices Islam and regards himself as a hafiz and qari of the Quran.
Career
Cheema began his film career working behind the scenes as a stuntman. After roughly sixteen years performing stunts, he moved into supporting acting roles, beginning with a part as Qasim in the 1989 film Kalka. Over time he developed a reputation for playing antagonists and has been widely identified in the Pakistani press as one of the industry’s favourite villain actors.
Across decades he has built an extensive body of work in Lollywood. Notable film roles include Afzal in Parinday (1992), Haji Rasheed Ahmed in Pajero Group (1994), Ghulam-E-Mustafa in Ishtehari Gujjar (2001), Changez in Naag aur Nagin (2005), Balwant Singh in Kafra (2011), Bashir Bhatti in Main Hoon Shahid Afridi (2013), and Ghulam Rasool in Geo Sar Utha Kay (2017). One of his better-known performances was as Saqa Kanjar in the 2011 film Bol.
In 2022 he appeared in the high-profile film The Legend of Maula Jatt, playing the character Jeeva Natt; that film went on to become Pakistan’s highest-grossing release at the time and entered the 100-crore club shortly after its release.
Cheema’s screen work also extends to television. He played Abdul Ghafoor in Geo Entertainment’s Khuda Aur Muhabbat in 2011, portrayed Dinga in Ashk (2012) on the same channel, and appeared as Kedo in Heer Ranjha on PTV Home in 2013. He has also participated in stage work, performing in the play Munda Bigra Jaye at the Rawalpindi Arts Council in March 2022. In June 2021 he was featured in the music video Khat by Masuma Anwar.
Public profile
Cheema has spoken in interviews about the craft of playing villains, noting that the work requires maturity and a focused approach to inhabiting darker roles. Early guidance from mentors steered him toward negative parts; he has said those roles opened opportunities for him to establish himself as a leading villain figure rather than a conventional hero.
Throughout his career he has been involved in physically demanding sequences and has recounted an on-set near-drowning incident while filming Dil Sambhala Na Jaye near Rawal Lake. He has also addressed false media reports, including an episode in 2019 when incorrect social media claims about a death were linked to his family; he used public channels to clarify that his son was alive.
Personal life
Cheema is widowed. He is the father of seven children: a son, Sheharyar Cheema, who is an actor, and six daughters. He has two sisters. His public remarks reflect a lifelong attachment to his religious practice alongside his film career.
