Raised in a political family—his father, Makhdoom Sajjad Hussain Qureshi, served in the Senate and later as Governor of Punjab—Qureshi received his early education at Aitchison College in Lahore. He went on to study at Forman Christian College and the University of the Punjab before attending Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he completed postgraduate work in law and history.
Qureshi comes from a Sufi Muslim background and has long identified professionally as a politician and agriculturist. He is known to be a non-vegetarian and has been involved in farmers’ organisations, including serving as president of the Farmers Association of Pakistan.
Career
Qureshi’s political career stretches back to the 1980s. He first won election to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab from a Multan constituency in 1985 and soon after joined the Pakistan Muslim League. He was re-elected in 1988 and served in the Punjab provincial cabinet as Minister of Planning and Development. Following another election victory in 1990, he held the provincial portfolio for finance.
When party tickets and alliances shifted in the early 1990s, Qureshi switched to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 1993. That year he was elected to the National Assembly for the first time and served as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in Benazir Bhutto’s government. He lost his seat in 1997, declined an appointment offered by President Pervez Musharraf, and later served as Mayor of Multan from 2000 to 2002.
Qureshi returned to the National Assembly after the 2002 general election and in 2006 was named president of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Punjab chapter by Benazir Bhutto. He won again in 2008 and joined the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 2011 he left PPP and joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), where he was appointed the party’s first vice-chairman in December of that year. He was re-elected to the National Assembly in 2013. Following PTI’s victory in the 2018 general election, Qureshi was again appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in Imran Khan’s government.
