Early life and background

Syed Shahnawaz Hussain was born on 12 December 1968 in Buzrug Dwar Warisnagar, Samastipur, Bihar. Raised in the Kosi region, he completed school at Williams High School, Supaul, and later pursued diplomas in engineering through studies in Patna and at the Industrial Training Institute in Pusa, New Delhi.

Hussain began his working life outside politics, taking engineering roles in private companies before turning his attention full time to public life. He lists social work, reading and watching the news, and following sports among his personal interests.

Career

Hussain entered active politics through the Bharatiya Janata Party and established himself early in the party’s youth organisation. While still a student he rose to a national role in the BJP’s youth wing and was later appointed All India Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He became a member of the BJP National Executive in the youth wing in 1991 and worked under senior leaders of the organisation.

He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1999 from Kishanganj and was brought into the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet that year as Minister of State for Food Processing Industries. Over the next several years his responsibilities expanded: he served as Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, and in February 2001 was given independent charge of the Coal Ministry.

At age 30 he was elevated to the rank of Cabinet Minister for Civil Aviation, a promotion that marked him as one of the youngest cabinet ministers in the government. In May 2003 he took charge of the Textiles portfolio as Cabinet Minister. Hussain was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in a 2006 by-election and again in 2009, serving on a number of parliamentary committees including the Standing Committee on External Affairs, the Committee on Estimates and the Committee of Petitions. On 17 December 2009 he was designated an official BJP spokesperson in Parliament.

Hussain served three consecutive terms in the Lok Sabha. He lost the Bhagalpur seat in the 2014 general election and was not given a ticket by his party for the 2019 Lok Sabha contest; he publicly expressed support for the party’s leadership and its prime ministerial candidate that year. He has also been active on development matters in his region, including work to have Bhagalpur included in the Prime Minister’s Smart Cities Mission.

He is married to Renu Sharma; the couple married in 1994 and have three children: two sons, Arbaaz and Adeeb, and a daughter, Adira.
