Shaktikanta Das was born on 26 February 1957 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He completed his schooling at the Demonstration Multipurpose School in Bhubaneswar and went on to study at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, where he earned both a BA and an MA in History. Over the course of his education he also completed executive and professional courses related to finance and management, including an advanced financial management course at IIM Bangalore and a development banking and institutional credit course at the National Institute of Bank Management in Pune.

Career

Das entered the Indian Administrative Service in 1980 and was allotted the Tamil Nadu cadre. His early postings included field-level responsibilities such as assistant collector, sub-collector and collector. Over subsequent decades he moved through a range of state and central government roles, including joint secretary and additional secretary positions in ministries related to finance and economic affairs.

He served as Secretary in several central ministries, including the Department of Economic Affairs and the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, and also held the post of Secretary, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. In 2017 he was a member of the 15th Finance Commission and was appointed India’s Sherpa for the G20’s Development Track through the end of 2018.

After a long career in the civil service spanning more than three decades, Das retired from the IAS in 2017. Following his retirement he remained active in public economic policy, including work on fiscal matters with the 15th Finance Commission. In the aftermath of the November 2016 demonetisation exercise, he took part in the launch of redesigned currency notes.

On 11 December 2018 he was appointed as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, taking over the country’s central banking responsibilities.
