Early life and background

Shalmalee Desai was born on 17 March 1989 in Pune, Maharashtra, and grew up in Mumbai. She completed her schooling at St. Gregorios High School in Mumbai and went on to study at Ramnivas Ruia Junior College and Ramnarain Ruia College, where she earned a BA with a major in psychology. She pursued further studies in business and marketing, obtaining an MBA in Marketing from the Welingkar Institute of Management and a master’s-level qualification in digital marketing from UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Dublin. She also completed a screenwriting course at Whistling Woods International Institute.

Desai trained in Kathak dance for fifteen years and is also known to play golf.

Career

Desai began her professional life in the corporate world, joining Zee Networks in June 2011 as a Marketing Management Trainee. After a brief initial stint she later returned to the company in 2021 as an assistant brand manager and worked there for about a year. Her corporate experience also includes roles at event and digital agencies: she became an account manager at Vama Events Pvt. Ltd. in November 2017, left in April 2019, and rejoined the company as a project manager in 2023. In March 2021 she joined DViO Digital in Mumbai as a client partner and remained with the firm for roughly seven months.

She made appearances in several other television projects: a role in the crime series Encounter on Sony TV (2014), a cameo in Ek Haseena Thi (2014) on StarPlus, and episodes of the mini-series Gulmohar Grand (2015) on StarPlus. In 2017 she appeared in the short film August 16th.
