Early life and backgroundShamita Surendra Shetty was born on 2 February 1979 in Mangalore, Karnataka, and grew up in a Tulu-speaking Bunt family. She was raised in Mumbai, where she attended St. Anthony’s Girls’ High School before studying commerce at Sydenham College. Her education also includes a three-year fashion design course at SNDT Women’s University and interior design studies at Inchbald School of Design and Central Saint Martins in London.
Career
Shamita began her career in the fashion world as an intern with designer Manish Malhotra, an experience that opened doors to the entertainment industry. Her screen debut came in 2000 with the Bollywood romantic drama Mohabbatein, in which she played Ishika Dhanrajgir. The role earned her early recognition and an award for Best Female Debut at the 2001 IIFA Awards.
After Mohabbatein, Shamita acted in films across several Indian film industries, including Tamil (Raajjiyam, 2002) and Telugu (Pilisthe Palukutha, 2003). In Hindi cinema she appeared in titles such as Wajahh: A Reason to Kill (2004), Fareb (2004), Zeher: A Love Story (2005) — for which she received a Stardust nomination — Cash (2007) and Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors (2008). She also featured in the popular song “Sharara Sharara” from Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002), which increased her visibility.
Shamita spent periods away from feature films to develop a second career in interior design. She designed a nightclub in Mumbai called Royalty and later formalized her training in London. Back in India she worked with an architect to gain practical experience and went on to found Golden Leaf Interiors.
