Shammi Narang Biography
Shammi Narang is an Indian voice-over artist and former Doordarshan news anchor best known as the voice of multiple Indian metro systems, including the New
Early life and backgroundShammi Narang was born on 25 November 1956 in Delhi into a Sikh family with a background in the armed forces. He studied at Andhra Education Society, Rouse Avenue, ITO, Delhi, completing an engineering course and later a postgraduate degree in metallurgy. During his student years he pursued adventurous pastimes such as stunt riding and developed an early interest in sound and performance.
Career
Narang’s introduction to professional voice work came while he was a student, when a technical director from the United States Information Service heard him testing a microphone and recommended him for Hindi voice work. That early encouragement led to training in the Hindi division of Voice of America and the start of a long voice-oriented career.
After completing his post-graduate studies he worked in marketing for Larsen & Toubro for a period, and by the early 1980s he began competing for and winning broadcast roles. In 1982 he secured a place at Doordarshan after a widely attended audition and went on to work with the public broadcaster for around twenty years. His baritone, diction and pronunciation became widely recognized during that era, and he became one of Doordarshan’s prominent news readers.
Following his tenure at Doordarshan, Narang expanded into voice-over work, theatre and production. He founded Pin Drop in 1998, a recording studio that was among Delhi’s early digital facilities and has been used by voice artists and musicians. He has provided voice recordings for many high-profile public audio projects, including official in-station and in-train announcements across multiple Indian metro systems — Delhi Metro, Rapid Metro Gurgaon, Mumbai Metro, Bangalore Metro, Jaipur Metro and Hyderabad Metro Rail — where his courteous delivery and signature phrases are heard by passengers daily.
Narang’s work extends to film, advertising and live events. He has acted in Hindi films and appeared on screen in roles such as Justice Jain in Jessica Lal Murder Case (2011). He has composed music for television commercials and produced corporate films. Since 1997 he has anchored the Godfrey Phillips National Bravery Awards ceremonies. He has also worked as a visiting faculty member at MADarts and at the film school started by the late Jaspal Bhatti, contributing voice work to short films produced there.
Public profile
Narang is known not just for his broadcast work but also for his musical interests. He is a semi-trained singer and often performs with his wife, Dolly Narang, who is a trained classical vocalist. He plays jazz drums and harmonium in his leisure time and has sung live ghazals at events with his wife. He has described a disciplined daily routine to maintain his voice, including short vocal exercises, steaming and stress management through yoga and meditation.
He has spoken publicly on language and broadcasting issues, urging the use of clear, simple Hindi in place of rare or archaic words. He has also been vocal about the changing nature of television news and the different demands placed on modern anchors compared with earlier generations of news readers.
Narang keeps a relatively low celebrity profile and has said he avoids Page 3 culture. In addition to broadcast and recording projects, he has served as a compere for high-profile public events such as a large Guinness record–breaking tea party and has participated in television programs and campaigns.
