Early life and background
Shammi Rabadi was born Nargis Rabadi in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in 1929 into a Parsi family. Her father served as a priest at the local Agyari and died when she was very young. She grew up in Mumbai, where her elder sister Mani Rabadi later worked as a fashion designer in the Hindi film industry.

Shammi’s entry into films came through a family acquaintance who introduced her to producer-actor Sheikh Mukhtar. At Mukhtar’s suggestion she adopted the screen name Shammi to avoid confusion with another actress, and she signed a three-year contract that launched her acting career.

Career
Shammi made her film debut as a lead in Ustad Pedro (1949) at about 18 years old. The film’s success established her as a working actress and at the start of her career she supported her family with earnings from the industry.

Over the decades that followed she became a prolific character actress, ultimately accumulating credits in more than 200 films. Her body of work included both Hindi cinema and later television; she is remembered for a notable television role as Choti Nani in the sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993).

Her screen career brought recognition as well: in 1971 she received the BFJA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Samaj Ko Badal Dalo.

Personal life
Shammi was married to filmmaker Sultan Ahmed. The marriage lasted seven years and ended in divorce. The couple experienced two miscarriages and Shammi did not have children.

Her family included an elder sister, Mani Rabadi, who pursued a career as a fashion designer and worked with actresses in Hindi films. Her parents’ names are not recorded in the available information.

Public profile
Shammi was part of the film community and maintained friendships with prominent industry figures; she was known to be friendly with actresses such as Nargis Dutt and Asha Parekh and also counted Amitabh Bachchan among her acquaintances.

Physically, she was reported to be about 158 cm tall (around 5 feet 2 inches), with dark brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. She practiced Zoroastrianism and retained strong ties to her Parsi heritage throughout her life.

Later years and death
Shammi’s career spanned multiple decades, and she continued to be remembered for both her film and television work. She died in Mumbai on 6 March 2018 at the age of 89 after suffering from a chronic illness.

Latest updates
Shammi’s contributions to Hindi cinema and television are reflected in a long filmography and in the memories of colleagues and audiences. She is often referred to affectionately as Shammi Aunty, a sign of the warm public regard for many of her character portrayals.
