Early life and background

Shankar Jiwal was born on 14 August 1965 in Almora, Uttarakhand. He completed a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1987 and went on to earn an MBA and a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering. His higher education includes studies at Delhi College of Engineering (now Delhi Technological University), Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) in Chennai, and Anna University, Chennai. Before joining the civil services he worked with government organisations including SAIL and BHEL.

Career

Jiwal cleared the UPSC examination in 1990 and was allocated to the Tamil Nadu cadre of the Indian Police Service as part of the 1990 batch. Early postings included a stint as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Mannargudi in 1993. He went on to serve as Superintendent of Police for Salem district in 1995 and held the SP post in Madurai district in 1999.

In 1996 he served as Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Tamil Nadu. Around 2000 he was SP and Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau in Chennai. His career progressed into senior leadership roles: he served as Deputy Inspector General and Chief of Police of Trichy city in 2004, and by 2008 he was Deputy Inspector General (Intelligence-II) in Chennai.

He later became Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Intelligence in Chennai and took charge of the IGP position for the Special Task Force in Erode. By 2015 he was Additional Director General of Police of the STF in Erode. Jiwal has also been IGP of Internal Security and was involved in establishing the Organized Crime Intelligence Unit in Tamil Nadu.

In 2021 he assumed the combined responsibility of Director General of Police and Commissioner of Police for Greater Chennai Police. On 1 July 2023 he was appointed Director General of Police for the state of Tamil Nadu.

Awards and recognition

Over the course of his service Jiwal has been awarded the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2007 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2019.
