Shanthi Arvind Biography

Shanthi Arvind is an Indian choreographer, dancer and television actress from Chennai. Known widely as "Metti Oli Shanthi" for her work on the popular soap

Early life and background

Shanthi Arvind was born on 17 February 1980 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She grew up in the same city and holds Indian nationality. Described as tall and slim, her listed height is about 170 cm (5'7"). Her eye and hair colour are both recorded as black. Shanthi’s zodiac sign is Aquarius and she follows Hinduism.

Career

Shanthi began working in cinema at a young age — she started her career as a dancer and by her early teens was already working full time in the industry. Her first noted film appearance as a dancer was in the Tamil film Kizhakku Vaasal (1990), in which she performed in the song "Tadukhi Dethki." Over time she expanded her work to choreography and acting, building a multi-faceted presence in Tamil film and television.

Her choreography credits include the Hindi song "Dhakka Laga Bukka" from the film Yuva (2004), which is the Hindi version of a song from the Tamil film Ayutha Ezhuthu. On television, Shanthi choreographed and performed the title track for the widely seen Tamil serial Metti Oli (2002); that title song and her performance there brought her significant recognition and the popular nickname "Metti Oli Shanthi." She has recalled that the Metti Oli title sequence was put together quickly and shot the night before the serial premiered.

As an actor, Shanthi has appeared on Tamil television; one named role is Mangalasundari Karunakaran in the series Kula Deivam (2015). In 2022 she joined the cast of the reality show Bigg Boss Tamil Season 6 as a contestant.

Public profile

Shanthi’s early career involved long periods of struggle. She has shared that, during her initial years as a dancer, she faced teasing about her thin and tall appearance and would sometimes layer clothing to appear less slim. She has also recounted difficult on-set experiences during song shoots while establishing herself in the field. Despite those challenges, she persevered, worked with many choreographers, and bought a membership card for a dance union in the 1990s after extensive effort and auditions.

Shanthi credits director Thirumurugan with opening doors for her in acting, and she has expressed gratitude for the opportunities that allowed her to balance choreography and acting.

Personal life

Shanthi is married to Arvind; the couple wed in 2007. They have two children, a son and a daughter. She has mentioned taking a break from cinema after the birth of her first child and facing difficult decisions around a second pregnancy during a period when she was trying to re-establish her career.

Awards and recognition

In 2022 Shanthi received the Ajantha TV award for Best Villi, reflecting her work on television.

Latest updates

Shanthi appeared as a participant on Bigg Boss Tamil Season 6 in 2022, continuing to maintain a presence on Tamil television while also being recognized for her choreography and acting work in serials and films.
