Sharad S. Kapoor was born on 13 February 1976 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. He grew up in a middle-class family and completed his schooling at a government school in Calcutta. From an early age he was a keen moviegoer, regularly visiting cinemas during his school years.

Kapoor began his film work behind the camera as an assistant director, with his debut credit on the 1991 film Lakshmanrekha. He moved into acting in the mid-1990s, making his Hindi film acting debut in Mera Pyara Bharat in 1994 and appearing in Bengali cinema with the 1997 film Achena Atithi, in which he played the role of Pratap/Ranjit.
