Early life and background

Sharad Malhotra was born on 9 January 1983 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and grew up with family roots in Kolkata. He attended St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata and completed a B.Com (Hons) degree. Described as coming from a middle-class background, Malhotra developed an early interest in modelling and performing; at around age 20 he won a regional modelling title, Face of the Year–Kolkata.

Career

Malhotra began his show-business journey by taking part in talent searches and reality formats. In 2004 he won the Kolkata division of Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj, which helped launch his career on television. His first TV appearance came the same year in Princess Dollie Aur Uska Magic Bag, and he later returned to screen work after a short study period at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles to sharpen his acting skills.

He rose to national prominence with his portrayal of Sagar Pratap Singh on Zee TV’s Banoo Main Teri Dulhann. The part — which required him to inhabit a character with cognitive challenges — established him as a familiar face on Indian television and brought both critical and popular recognition. For this performance he received multiple awards from Indian Telly, Zee Gold and Zee Rishtey, including Best Actor (Critics), Best Actor (Popular), Best Onscreen Couple (with Divyanka Tripathi) and Gold Debut (Male).

Malhotra expanded into other formats and genres over the years. He made his film debut in From Sydney with Love (2012) and also competed on the reality show India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj in 2004.
