Early life and backgroundSharad Panday was born on 22 October 1934 in Bombay, then part of the Bombay Presidency in British India. He grew up in the city that would later be called Mumbai and completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School, Matunga. Panday went on to study medicine at Grant Government Medical College, Mumbai, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and later a Master of Surgery.
Career
Panday trained further overseas, receiving a fellowship from the Ontario Heart Foundation in 1969 and a fellowship at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada. He trained under Canadian surgeon Wilfred Gordon Bigelow and brought techniques learned abroad back to India.
After returning to Mumbai, Panday served as second unit chief at King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (KEM). In the 1970s and 1980s he performed numerous open-heart procedures at KEM during a period when such operations were becoming established in India. He is reported to have been one of the surgeons involved in India’s first heart transplant carried out at KEM.
Panday continued to innovate throughout his career. In 1986 he performed a complex operation at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital that involved removal of a large tumour from the left ventricle, described as the first such operation in India. Practical problem-solving in difficult circumstances was a hallmark of his work: he adapted hospital plumbing to keep operations running when water supply failed and developed a surgical approach referred to as the Panday shunt for mitral valve replacement.
He contributed to the medical literature through numerous papers on topics ranging from endocarditis, neural tube defects, and rare tumours to studies of open-heart surgery technique and outcomes. In recognition of his professional standing, on 15 June 1991 he was chosen as the first president of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS).
Public profile
Panday’s career placed him in contact with prominent figures of his era. He met personalities such as Mother Teresa and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Colleagues and the medical community commemorated his work after his death; a junction in the Bandra suburb of Mumbai, located between St. Andrews Road and St. Dominic Road, was named in his honor.
Personal life
Sharad Panday was married to Snehlata Panday, who was also a physician. The couple had two sons: Chunky Panday, who became an actor and businessman, and Aloke "Chikki" Sharad Pandey, who pursued business interests and co-founded a non-profit organization supporting education for underprivileged children. Sharad Panday had several grandchildren, including actress Ananya Panday and influencer Alanna Panday. He followed the Brahmin family tradition and was described as Indian by nationality. His physical stature was listed as approximately 178 cm (5 feet 10 inches), with black eyes and salt-and-pepper hair.
Death and legacy
Sharad Panday died in Mumbai on 8 November 2004 at the age of 70. His medical contributions, particularly in establishing open-heart surgical practice in Mumbai, his early participation in heart transplantation efforts, and his leadership role in forming the IACTS, are part of his professional legacy.
