Early life and background

Sharan Hegde was born on 15 July 1995 in Mangalore, Karnataka. Raised in a family where his father ran a restaurant in Mysore, he showed an early interest in business and money management — helping at the restaurant’s cash counter during school holidays and saving pocket money from relatives. A reserved student and avid reader as a child, he developed curiosity about how finance and cash flow worked, which later shaped his career path.

Education and early career

Hegde studied mechanical engineering at R. V. College of Engineering in Bengaluru, where his interest in finance deepened. While at college he took on a leadership role in the Ashwa Racing Club and eventually handled its finances as the club’s CFO. He began saving and investing while still an undergraduate, and by his third year had accumulated a meaningful sum that he put into the stock market.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering, Hegde entered the professional workforce through campus placement and joined KPMG in Greater Bengaluru as an analyst in July 2018. After more than two years at KPMG he left in November 2020 and spent time working with an NGO. In April 2021 he became an Associate Consultant at PwC in Bengaluru and departed that role in January 2022. He enrolled at Columbia Business School for an MBA but left the program in August 2022.

During the COVID-19 lockdown Hegde began creating short-form finance content for social platforms with the intent of teaching practical finance to a wider audience. Although his YouTube channel, Finance With Sharan, had been created in 2014, he posted his first finance video there in January 2021. Early uploads were modest in production — filmed on a Mi phone and edited slowly — but he steadily improved his production setup and content planning.

He initially focused on mutual funds, a topic he felt comfortable with, and expanded coverage over time to taxation, insurance and broader personal finance topics to reach a wider audience. His sister played an important role in encouraging him to post on Instagram and later helped with editing.

In April 2022 Hegde launched The 1% Club, a members-only community aimed at helping people pursue financial independence. The initiative expanded its educational offerings, and in January 2024 The 1% Club partnered with creators and teachers across India to add programs focused on areas such as stock market investing and tax planning. The club also launched a Tax Planning Strategy program in collaboration with CA Rishita Motwani to teach practical tax rules and planning techniques.
