Early life and backgroundSharjeel Imam was born in 1988 and raised in Kako in Jehanabad district, Bihar. He attended St Xavier's High School in Patna and later studied at Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj. He completed an integrated B.Tech–M.Tech program in computer science at IIT Bombay, where he also worked as a teaching assistant in his final year. Imam has described experiencing prejudice as a young Muslim student in a large, predominantly non-Muslim class.
After leaving work as a software developer, he enrolled at Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2013 to pursue studies in modern Indian history. At JNU he completed an M.A. and an M.Phil and proceeded toward a PhD. While on campus he was associated with student politics, including a period of membership in the student group AISA from 2013 to 2015.
Career
Imam combined academic work in modern Indian history with public activism. He developed a reputation among some former teachers and peers for strong knowledge of history and intellectual engagement with subjects such as South Asian and Islamic thought.
During the nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), Imam was active in organising and speaking at demonstrations. He helped organise actions under the name "Chakka Jam," a campaign intended to block major routes in Delhi, and participated in protests such as those at Shaheen Bagh.
Legal cases and detention
Following video-recorded speeches delivered at several locations, including Aligarh Muslim University, authorities alleged that Imam had made statements that incited communal tensions. FIRs were lodged in multiple jurisdictions, and he was arrested from his hometown of Kako, Jehanabad, on 28 January 2020 in a joint operation by Delhi and Bihar police. Charges brought by investigators included sedition and offences related to promoting communal enmity and unlawful activities.
A Delhi court framed charges of sedition and related offences against him on 24 January 2022, which included sections of the Indian Penal Code and a provision of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In February 2023, a trial court discharged Imam and several co-accused in one of the cases related to the Jamia violence; that decision was later set aside by the Delhi High Court in March 2023, which found that the accused had been among those participating in an unlawful assembly and highlighted video evidence cited in its judgment. On 29 May 2024 the Delhi High Court granted him bail in a 2020 communal riots case, though he remained detained on account of his involvement as an accused in a broader conspiracy case connected to the same period of unrest.
Public profile
Imam's public profile mixes scholarship and activism. He has written and spoken on historical and political topics and has been described by acquaintances and some teachers as an intelligent student with particular interests in modern Indian history and Islamic thought. His family includes his father Syed Akbar Imam and mother Afshan Rahim; his younger brother Muzzammil Imam has been active as a social activist. His father contested an assembly election in Bihar in 2005 and died in 2014.
