Sharmistha Mukherjee was born on 30 October 1965 in West Bengal, India. Raised in a family with strong public and political ties, she spent much of her life based in Delhi. She attended Lady Irwin School in Delhi and went on to study at Delhi University, where she completed postgraduate work in sociology. Her parents are Pranab Mukherjee and Suvra Mukherjee.
