Early life and background

Shatrughan Prasad Sinha was born on 9 December 1945 in Patna, Bihar, then part of British India. He attended Patna Science College and later took an acting course at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Standing around 6 feet tall with light brown eyes and black hair, Sinha began his career ambitions in cinema after growing up admiring established film personalities.

Career

Sinha made his film debut in 1969 with the movie Sajan, after an earlier project encountered post-production delays. He went on to build a successful acting career and became known across Hindi and regional screens. Over the years he earned recognition for his performances, including a Best Supporting Actor award from the Bengal Film Journalists' Association in the early 1970s, and several lifetime achievement honors from Stardust, Zee Cine and IIFA later in his career. He was also awarded the National Kishore Kumar Samman.

Beyond acting, Sinha and his wife set up a production company called Shotgun Movies. He took on television work as well, hosting a Bhojpuri incarnation of a popular game show and serving as a judge on a national comedy program.

Politics

Sinha entered politics in the early 1990s. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested his first notable parliamentary contest in a 1992 by-election from New Delhi. Although he lost that race, he continued in public life and later served in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet, holding portfolios that included Health and Family Welfare and, subsequently, Shipping in the early 2000s. He was appointed head of his party’s culture and arts department in 2006.

Sinha won the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and retained it in the 2014 general election. In 2019 he left the BJP and joined the Indian National Congress. He switched again in March 2022 to the All India Trinamool Congress and soon after won a by-election for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat in April 2022 by a margin of over two hundred thousand votes. In 2024 he successfully contested the Asansol seat again, winning by 59,564 votes.

Public profile

Sinha has cultivated a public image that blends his film persona with his political career. He is known for a direct speaking style and for several notable moments that attracted media attention, including public disagreements with peers and outspoken commentary in his autobiography. His off-screen life has been covered widely: he married actress Poonam Sinha in July 1980, and the couple have three children, including daughter Sonakshi Sinha and sons Luv and Kush. He has been identified with interests such as music and yoga.

Throughout his life he has received multiple honors acknowledging his contributions to Indian cinema, including lifetime achievement awards and recognition for outstanding contribution at prominent industry events.

Latest updates

In the past several years Sinha has continued to be active in electoral politics, changing party affiliations twice between 2019 and 2022 and winning parliamentary contests from two different constituencies. In 2019 he contested Patna Sahib but lost; in 2022 he won Asansol in a by-election and followed that with a victory there in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Ahead of his daughter’s wedding in 2024, reports emerged about family dynamics and media attention on attendance, matters that Sinha later addressed by confirming the family’s presence at the event. In public commentary since then he has expressed positions on social and policy issues that have been reported in the news.
