Early life and background
Shawn Rhoden was born on April 2, 1975, in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up playing sports such as soccer and cricket and developed an interest in bodybuilding in his late teens. At 17 he began training to build size and strength, and in 1990 he moved to the United States to pursue bodybuilding more seriously.

Career
Rhoden began competing as an amateur in the late 1990s and posted steady progress in NPC Team Universe events, finishing third in 1999, fourth in 2000, second in 2001 and winning the event in 2009. That same year he also won the IFBB North American Championships, which helped him secure his IFBB Pro card in 2010.

After turning professional Rhoden appeared in a range of IFBB contests. Early pro results included a first-place finish at the 2010 Dallas Europa Super Show and a 2011 Olympia debut where he placed 11th. He continued to climb the rankings with multiple contest wins and high placings across the Arnold Classic events, Tampa Pro, EVLs Prague Pro, Dubai Pro and others.

Rhoden achieved consistent top-level results at Mr. Olympia throughout the 2010s; highlights include third-place finishes in 2012, 2014 and 2015, runner-up at the 2016 Olympia and ultimately winning the Mr. Olympia title in 2018. His competitive stats during his pro career list him at approximately 178 cm (5'10") in height, contest weight near 111 kg (245 lbs) and off-season weight around 116 kg (255 lbs). Approximate bodybuilding measurements reported include a 50-inch chest, 34-inch waist and 24-inch biceps.

Public profile
Rhoden competed under the nickname "Flexatron" and was recognized for his longevity and late rise to the top of professional bodybuilding. His career included a documentary release in 2019 titled "Flexatron: Becoming Shawn Rhoden," which focused on his life and journey in the sport.

Personal life
Rhoden held Jamaican nationality and was based in the United States for much of his adult life. He married Michelle Sugar in 2018; they had a daughter named Cora Capri. At the time of his death his marital status is recorded as divorced. His father, Lloyd, predeceased him in 2002; his mother's name is not listed in the available details.

Challenges and setbacks
Across his career Rhoden faced significant obstacles, including injuries early on — notably a serious right-hand injury in 1993 — and periods away from competition. He also dealt with personal struggles that at times affected his training and career trajectory. Despite those setbacks, he returned to the sport, earned his pro status in 2010 and went on to achieve top-level success.

Death and legacy
Shawn Rhoden died on November 6, 2021, in the United States at the age of 46. The reported cause of death was a heart attack. He is remembered for his remarkable comeback story and for winning the 2018 Mr. Olympia title, a late-career pinnacle following years of perseverance.
