Early life and background

Shazia Ilmi Mallik was born on 2 April 1970 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up in a family with ties to public life; her father, Maulana Ishaq Ilmi, founded the Urdu newspaper Siyasat Jadid. Shazia attended St. Mary’s School in Kanpur and later in Nainital. Her higher education includes studies at St. Bede's College, Shimla, Jamia Millia Islamia, the University of Wales in Cardiff, and a diploma in 16mm film production from the New York Film Academy.

Career

Ilmi began her professional life in journalism. She worked with Star News as a news anchor and producer, hosting the prime-time program Desh Videsh. She also produced and presented investigative programming, including a series of sting reports on medical practitioners that led to disciplinary action against some doctors. In 2011 she produced the film P.O. 418 Siyasat Kanpur, which examined the struggle to sustain an Urdu newspaper and was screened at the IAWRT film festival.

Her public activism included serving as a spokesperson for the India Against Corruption movement around 2011–2012. She transitioned into party politics with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013. Ilmi contested the 2013 Delhi Assembly election from the R K Puram constituency on an AAP ticket and narrowly lost. In 2014 she stood for the Lok Sabha from Ghaziabad as an AAP candidate and was defeated.

Ilmi left AAP in May 2014 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 16 January 2015. Within the BJP she has been active in public communications and was appointed a national spokesperson on 21 July 2021.
