Early life and background

Shelly Nabu Kumar, professionally known as Shelly Kishore, was born on 18 August 1983 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and her family comes from Chirayinkeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. She spent much of her childhood in Muscat, Oman, where an early exposure to black‑and‑white Malayalam cinema sparked her interest in performance. At school she was active in arts and cultural festivals and later took formal training in several classical Indian dance forms, including Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi. She also completed an air passenger handling course at the Emirates Flight Training Academy.

Shelly pursued higher education in India and abroad. After finishing Class 12 she moved to Singapore for a diploma in mass communication at Oklahoma City University’s Singapore campus. Her academic training also includes a diploma in sociology from Indira Gandhi National Open University, a postgraduate diploma in E‑governance, and a master’s degree in communication and journalism from Sacred Heart College.

Career

Shelly Kishore began her screen career in Malayalam television and film in the mid‑2000s. An early, unreleased film project led to a TV introduction: a cameraman connected her with director Purushotthaman, who cast her in the Amrita TV serial Chitrashalabham (2006), where she played a double role. She followed that with appearances in other Malayalam TV productions, including Koottu Kudumbam on Kairali TV and the telefilm Thaniye on Amrita TV, in which she played the character Padma.

Television brought Shelly wider recognition. Her portrayal of Shalini Rudran in the long‑running Asianet soap Kumkumapoovu (2011–2014) became one of her most prominent roles, earning her multiple television awards and raising her profile across Malayalam audiences. After the show concluded she stepped back from TV to focus on family responsibilities before returning as the lead Balasudha in the Mazhavil Manorama serial Sthreepadham (2017–2020). She later appeared as Jeena in Surya TV’s Ente Maathavu (2020–2021).

On film, Shelly has worked across Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi projects. Her early film credits include a small role in the anthology Kerala Cafe (in the Island Express segment, 2009) and The Waiting Room (2010) in Hindi. Shelly has also appeared in a 2016 YouTube short film, Chirakinte Maravil, and in the Tamil horror thriller Naane Varuvean (2022). In 2023 she reached new audiences with a Telugu web series role as Savithri in Shaitan on Disney+ Hotstar.
