Early life and background

Shikhar Dhawan was born on 5 December 1985 in Delhi, India. Raised in a middle-class Punjabi family with roots in Ludhiana, he attended St. Mark's Senior Secondary Public School in Delhi and completed education up to 12th standard. Cricket entered his life early: after watching a cousin who played at Sonnet Club, his parents enrolled him there at age 12 under coach Tarak Sinha. In his first year at the club he scored a century in an under-15 school tournament. Early on he was more of a wicket-keeper than a specialist batsman.

Career

Dhawan made his ODI debut for India on 20 October 2010 against Australia at Visakhapatnam, his T20 International debut on 4 June 2011 against the West Indies at Port of Spain, and his Test debut on 14 March 2013 against Australia at Mohali. Over a career that spanned domestic and international cricket, he represented several domestic and franchise sides including Deccan Chargers, Delhi, Delhi Daredevils, India A, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He wore jersey numbers 25 and 16 for India and number 25 in domestic cricket.

In List A cricket he produced one of the highest individual scores with 248 off 150 balls for India A against South Africa A in Pretoria. He was among the fastest run-accumulators in ICC ODI tournaments, reaching 1,000 ICC tournament runs in 16 innings.

On Test debut he scored 187 runs against Australia, making him the 97th batsman to score a century on Test debut and recording one of the quickest centuries on Test debut — 187 off 85 balls. In ICC events he was the Man of the Series in the 2013 Champions Trophy and finished as the highest run-scorer for India in the 2015 Cricket World Cup with 412 runs from eight innings. He became the first cricketer to win two consecutive Golden Bats at the ICC Champions Trophy. In limited-overs cricket he and David Warner were the first opening pair to score more than 2,000 runs together in the IPL, and together with Rohit Sharma he set a record opening partnership of 158 in T20 internationals against New Zealand in 2017. He was also the first Indian (ninth overall) to score a century in his 100th ODI, achieving that against South Africa in 2018.
