Early life and background

Shirish Bhoja Kunder was born on 24 May 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka. Trained as an electronics engineer, he completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Engineering and Technology in Karnataka and later attended a course in Advanced Screening at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles.

Career

Kunder began his film career in the late 1990s working behind the scenes as an assistant director and assistant editor. He spent a year in 1997 as a full-time assistant director at Media Entertainment Company Pvt Ltd and in 1998 worked as a full-time assistant film editor with Renu Saluja. Before entering the film industry full time, he worked for Motorola for four years.

His debut as a feature film editor came with the 2000 action film Champion. Over the following years he edited a string of Hindi films including Aankhen (2002), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002), Calcutta Mail (2003), Paisa Vasool (2004), Uuf Kya Jaadoo Mohabbat Hai… (2004), Socha Na Tha (2005) and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005). While working on Main Hoon Na (2004) he developed a personal relationship with the film’s director, which led to marriage later that year.

Kunder made his directorial, writing and composing debut with the musical romance Jaan-E-Mann (2006). For that film he also handled editing, background music composition and contributed to the screenplay and dialogue. He went on to direct the science-fiction comedy Joker (2012), and wrote and produced the 2010 heist comedy Tees Maar Khan. In 2016 he wrote and directed the psychological thriller short film Kriti, which released on YouTube and drew a large online audience.

In 2009 he and his wife co-founded a production company, Three’s Company Productions Private Limited. His fourth directorial project to reach a broad audience was the Netflix crime thriller Mrs. Serial Killer (2020), which featured Jacqueline Fernandez and Manoj Bajpayee and became one of the more-watched Indian Netflix Originals.

Shirish Kunder married director-choreographer Farah Khan on 9 December 2004. The couple have three children: a son, Czar, and twin daughters, Diva and Anya, who were born on 11 February 2008 via IVF. His parents are Joseph and Geetanjali Kunder; he has a brother, Ashmith Kunder, who is also active in the film industry as an editor, director, producer and actor.
