Early life and background

Shiva Sundar Shrestha was born on 20 June 1953 in Biratnagar, Nepal. He grew up in a Newar family and later became known publicly as an ardent follower of Sai Baba. Before choosing acting as a profession, he considered several different careers — at various times he aspired to become a pilot and later a police inspector. Sports also played an important part in his early life: he competed in national-level wrestling and took part in volleyball and football competitions, including representing a club in Kathmandu.

Career

Shrestha began his performing career on the stage, appearing in Nepali theatre productions such as Ramesh Budhathoki’s play Dui Las Ek Chihan. He transitioned to film with his Nepali screen debut in Jeevan Rekha in 1982 and quickly became associated with action-oriented parts. Over the course of his career he has played leading roles in many Nepali films, including Kanchhi (1984), Bishwa (1986), Chino (1989), Manakamana (1990), Milan (1993), Dharma Sankat (1998) and Thuldai (1999).

In addition to his work in Nepal, Shrestha worked in the Pakistani film industry (often referred to as Lollywood) for about five years. He made his Lollywood debut in Humse Hai Zamana (1985) and appeared in several Urdu-language films such as Lawa (1984), Bangkok Ke Chor (1986), Lady Commando (1989) and Tiger (1985). He has said he also worked in film industries in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Japan.

Shrestha has been prolific on screen, with credits in more than 150 films. His physicality and action roles earned him nicknames like "Action King," and he has been described as a central figure in the Nepalese film industry. In later years he continued to take roles in high-profile projects; in 2022 he appeared in the Indo-Nepali film Prem Geet 3 as the father of the title character.

Beyond acting, Shrestha moved into production and direction for television: in 2016 he produced and directed a Nepali reality TV show titled Baliyo Ghar Surakshit Nepal. He has said that he was once offered a role in a Hollywood production but did not take it.

When asked about retirement, he has said he will continue acting as long as he is able.

Personal life

Shrestha is married and has children from two marriages. His first marriage produced several children, including a son, Shakti Shrestha, who is an actor, and daughters Abhi Shrestha, Sona and Shibangi.
