Shiva Thapa Biography
Indian boxer Shiva Thapa from Guwahati emerged early as a top amateur in Asia and the world. A disciplined athlete since childhood, he became the youngest—
Early life and backgroundShiva Thapa was born on 8 December 1993 in Guwahati, Assam, India. Brought up in a disciplined sporting household, he followed a strict daily routine from a young age that combined early-morning training with school. His father, Padam Thapa, a karate instructor, introduced him to martial arts before steering him toward boxing when he realised karate was not an Olympic sport.
Thapa grew up alongside several elder sisters and an older brother, Gobind Thapa, who also pursued boxing at the national level. The family’s training regimen demanded early starts and long days: waking as early as 3:00 a.m., running, and completing extensive conditioning before attending school.
Career
Thapa made his international debut at the Children Asia International Sports Games in Yakutsk, Russia, in 2008, where he won a bronze medal. From there he progressed steadily through youth and senior ranks, collecting medals across major amateur competitions.
At youth level he earned silver medals at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Baku the same year. He continued to make an impact as a senior competitor: in July 2013 he became the youngest Indian to win the gold medal at the Asian Confederation Boxing Championship in Amman, Jordan. That result was part of a sequence of successful Asian Championships performances—Thapa is the first and only Indian to have won three consecutive medals at the Asian Championships, taking gold in 2013, bronze in 2015 and silver in 2017.
Thapa also made a mark on the world stage. He won a bronze medal at the World Amateur Championships in Doha in 2015, becoming the third Indian to reach the podium at the AIBA World Boxing Championships. His performances helped secure India’s representation at the Rio 2016 Olympics; he was the first Indian boxer to qualify for those Games.
Across international tournaments Thapa’s medal record includes gold at the 48th Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem in the Czech Republic in 2017 and silver at the 2017 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Tashkent. He claimed a silver medal at the 38th GeeBee Boxing Tournament in Helsinki in March 2019. His achievements have been recognised domestically as well: he received the Arjuna Award in 2016 and earlier had been honoured with an ICC Sports Excellence Award in 2013 and a Breakthrough Performance of the Year award in 2011.
Thapa competes with an orthodox stance and has fought in weight divisions around 56–60 kg during his career. He has been coached by his father, Padam Thapa, and has trained at boxing clubs in his home region. He is noted for high-volume conditioning routines that include skipping, running and large numbers of calisthenics.
Public profile
Thapa’s profile in Indian boxing is built on early success and consistent results at continental and world levels. He was among a small group of Indian boxers to have won a world championship medal and was ranked inside the AIBA men’s world rankings in the 60 kg category. Beyond the ring he has worked for ONGC and lists hobbies such as listening to music, watching movies, playing football, swimming, horse riding and dancing.
Personal life
Thapa is Indian by nationality and was raised in Guwahati, which he considers his hometown. He follows a non-vegetarian diet and has cited boxers such as Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali and compatriot Vijender Singh among his favourites. His family includes parents Padam and Goma Thapa, an older brother Gobind and several elder sisters.
Latest updates
In recent years Thapa continued to compete internationally, adding medals at European and Asian events through 2019. His competitive history includes participation in youth and senior world championships and continental tournaments, and he remains one of India’s best-known amateur boxers from his generation.
