Shivanshu Soni was born on 23 June 2001 in Umri, Satna, Madhya Pradesh. Raised in a family that supported his artistic ambitions, he began performing onstage at age five and later took formal Kathak training in his hometown. Despite social resistance in his community to boys learning classical dance, his family provided the financial and emotional backing that allowed him to continue developing as a performer.

Limited access to varied dance training in Satna prompted Shivanshu to travel for workshops across India, including trips to Gujarat and Mumbai. After finishing his schooling at St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School in Satna and completing his 12th grade, he moved to Mumbai to pursue dance more seriously and expand his repertoire.

Career

Shivanshu developed a signature fusion style by combining traditional Kathak with contemporary techniques such as popping, waving, animation and cutting. This hybrid approach earned him the nickname “The Fusionist.” Early competitive success came in regional contests: he won the Dance Vindhya Dance competition in 2016 and later claimed the Evolution 2 All India Dance Championship in Goa in 2018, returning as a runner-up in the same event the next year.

His reality-show journey began in 2018 when he reached the Top 3 finalists on the Gujarat dance program Jam Ke Naach. That year he also attended a workshop with American choreographer Eric John Campros, who offered him a scholarship to study at Broadway Dance Centre in New York.

He took part in One Chance To Dance (2019) and in 2021 appeared on World of Dance’s qualifier rounds, where he finished as second runner-up in his qualifying heat. His most prominent national exposure came in 2023 on India’s Best Dancer (season 3). Shivanshu impressed judges with his blend of classical and street techniques, earning praise and comparisons to renowned dancers for his command of Kathak within a contemporary framework. He reached the grand finale and finished as second runner-up on the show.
