Early life and background
Shivendra Singh Choudhary was born on 9 June 1983 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Growing up in a sporting household, he began playing hockey informally on streets before following his elder brother to practice at a nearby stadium. His early schooling was at Shri Gandhi Shishu Mandir School in Gwalior. Singh’s formal hockey training began in his hometown and, in 1998, he took part in the Sub‑Junior National Championship. That same year he earned admission to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) program in Uttar Pradesh and moved to the Mumbai branch of SAI in 1999.

Career
Singh’s club and domestic progression included a contract with Tata Power’s hockey team and a stint with Western Railways beginning in 2002, where he trained under former player Gurbux Singh. He featured in a variety of junior and invitational tournaments and won the Best Player award at the Bombay Gold Cup in 2003 and again in 2005.

In 2005 he played for Maratha Warriors in the inaugural Premier Hockey League, helping the side to a bronze medal. The following year, his performance at the PHL event in Chandigarh attracted national selectors and led to direct selection for India’s senior team. Notably, Singh reached the senior national squad without progressing through traditional age‑group pathways.

On the international stage, he was part of India’s squad that won gold at the 2007 Men's Hockey Asia Cup in Chennai. He then featured in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, where India took the silver medal, and in the 2010 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. At the 2012 London Olympics he represented India as well.

Singh’s career also included disciplinary moments: during the 2010 Men’s Hockey World Cup in New Delhi he received a suspension for dangerous play; an initial three‑match ban from the International Hockey Federation was reduced to two matches on appeal.

After his playing days, Singh continued in hockey in coaching roles. He served as assistant coach of India’s men’s national team and, in 2023, was part of the coaching staff for the team at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Personal life and family
Shivendra Singh is married to fellow hockey player Nishi Singh; the couple married on 10 December 2010 and have two daughters. His parents are Jhamman Singh Choudhary and Radha Devi. He has two brothers; one of them, Gajendra Chaudhary, works for the central railways. Singh has cited his elder brother and his wife as major inspirations.

Playing style and public image
Known as a centre forward during his playing career, Singh was admired for his goal celebration in which he would salute the crowd as a sign of respect and gratitude. He has spoken about the importance of family conversations before matches and has named players he admired, including Dhanraj Pillay and Jamie Dwyer. He also singled out Indian goalkeeper Parattu Raveendran Sreejesh as a particularly challenging opponent and maintained a friendly relationship with him.
