Indian javelin thrower Shivpal Singh rose from a family of throwers to win medals at international competitions and qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Trained

Early life and background
Shivpal Singh was born on 6 July 1995 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in Chandauli village, about 30 kilometres from Varanasi. He comes from a family with a strong javelin tradition: his father, Ramasaray Singh, and other relatives threw the javelin, and his younger brother Nand Kishore Singh also competes nationally in the event. His mother, Poonam Singh, is deceased. As a child he was overweight, and his family encouraged him into athletics; he began practicing the javelin at age ten.

To develop his skills he trained for several years under family mentors and coaches. He spent an extended training period in New Delhi at his uncle’s place, where he worked intensively on technique and conditioning. Those early years of hard work in difficult conditions are something he later described as formative for his career.

Career
Shivpal is a specialist in the javelin throw who has represented India at major international meets. He was selected to represent India at the Junior World Championships in 2015 but missed participation because of injury. In 2016 he won the men’s javelin event at the Budapest Open Athletics in Hungary. He earned a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championships with a personal-best throw of 86.23 metres, finishing behind Chao-Tsun Cheng.

Later in 2019 he won gold at the Military World Games in Wuhan with a throw of 83.33 metres. That year he also competed on the Diamond League circuit, finishing eighth in Oslo with a best mark of 80.87 metres. Injuries affected parts of his competitive schedule: an elbow problem hampered his showing at the 2018 Asian Games, and he missed much of 2019 through injury. He credits national coach Uwe Hohn with helping him revive his career after those setbacks.

In 2020 he secured qualification for the Tokyo Olympics at a meeting in Potchefstroom, South Africa, with a throw of 85.47 metres. That performance made him the second Indian javelin thrower to earn an Olympic berth for Tokyo. He continued to train through the pandemic-related postponement of the Games, working on fitness and long throwing sessions at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala and later at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

On the domestic front, in 2020 he finished second at Indian Grand Prix 3 in Patiala with a throw of 81.63 metres. He missed the National Senior Federation Cup on 15 March 2021 because of an ankle injury.

Public profile
Shivpal has been coached or mentored by Jagmohan Singh, Kashinath Naik, and Uwe Hohn during his career. He pursued higher education at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, where he undertook undergraduate studies in BBA. He was selected to the Indian Air Force in 2012 as a Junior Warrant Officer.

He is unmarried. Physically, his height is listed at approximately 1.74 metres (5 feet 7 inches), with brown eyes and naturally black hair. His listed hobbies include listening to Punjabi music. Within Indian athletics he is often mentioned as one of the country’s leading javelin throwers alongside his contemporaries.

Latest updates
As of 2021 his age was 26. He remained active in training and competition preparations around the Tokyo Olympic cycle, with ongoing recovery from ankle issues that affected his participation in some national events that year.
