Shoaib Malik Biography

Shoaib Malik is a Pakistani all-round cricketer from Sialkot who has had a long international and domestic career across formats and leagues. A right‑handb

Early life and background

Shoaib Malik was born on 1 February 1982 in Sialkot, Punjab, Pakistan, and grew up between Sialkot and Karachi. He began taking cricket seriously after joining travelling coaching clinics in Sialkot in 1993 and progressed through youth trials, earning selection to Pakistan’s age-group sides in the mid‑1990s. As a youngster he played tape‑ball cricket in the streets and moved from being primarily a batsman to developing an off‑spin bowling skill that would later make him a versatile all‑rounder.

Career

Malik made his international debut at the end of the 1990s, appearing in Test cricket in October 1999 and in One Day Internationals in August 2001. He went on to represent Pakistan across Tests, ODIs and T20 Internationals, and wore the number 18 jersey for Pakistan and in several domestic and franchise teams.

Over a lengthy international career, Malik amassed significant batting and bowling figures. In Test cricket he played 35 matches, scored 1,898 runs with three centuries and a highest score of 245, and claimed 32 wickets. In One Day Internationals he featured in 287 matches, scored 7,534 runs with nine centuries and a highest score of 143, and took 158 wickets. He also played T20 internationals, making his T20 debut in August 2006.

Malik’s domestic and franchise career is extensive. He has represented many sides around the world, including Sialkot Stallions, Lancashire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, several Pakistan domestic sides, multiple Bangladesh Premier League teams, Caribbean franchises, teams in the Indian Premier League, and other global T20 leagues. He played for Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural IPL season and featured in a wide array of club and franchise competitions over the years.

On the field Malik batted right‑handed and bowled right‑arm offbreak. His favourite shot was the cover drive, and he was frequently described as calm in demeanour while playing. He enjoyed batting against India and produced several notable performances against them, including his career‑best ODI 143 against India in Colombo in July 2004. He was part of Pakistan’s squads for major tournaments, including the 2007 ICC World Cup and the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, the latter of which Pakistan won; Malik played in all matches of that T20 World Cup and contributed 144 runs in the tournament.

Leadership and retirement

Malik was appointed Pakistan captain across formats in April 2007 at age 25 and led the side in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, though his tenure as captain was relatively brief. He announced his retirement from Test cricket on 3 November 2015 and from One Day Internationals on 5 July 2019. His final matches in each format came between 2015 and 2021: his last Test appearance was in November 2015, his last ODI in June 2019, and his last T20 international in November 2021.

Public profile

Off the field, Malik’s life has been widely covered due to his high‑profile relationships and family. He has been married multiple times. His second marriage was to tennis player Sania Mirza on 12 April 2010; the couple had a son, Izhaan Mirza‑Malik, born on 30 October 2018. Media records indicate a later marriage on 20 January 2024 to actor Sana Javed. His first marriage was registered in 2002 and ended in divorce in April 2010.

Malik has also faced scrutiny over aspects of his playing action and conduct at times. He was reported for a suspect bowling action in the early 2000s but was cleared in November 2005. He was suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2010 following disciplinary concerns during a tour, though the ban was later lifted and the penalty reduced on appeal. In April 2024 he was mentioned in media coverage related to messages published by a public figure.

Personal life and interests

Malik’s family includes his father, Saleem Hussain Malik, who passed away in 2006, his mother Sultana Malik, and siblings. His younger brother Adeel Malik is also a professional cricketer. Malik lists hobbies such as reading and watching football and tennis; his favourite cricketer growing up was Wasim Akram and he has spoken fondly of foods and films he enjoys.

Latest updates

As of 2024, Malik is active in domestic and franchise cricket circles and remains a prominent figure in Pakistan’s cricketing landscape. His on‑field career record, wide experience across domestic competitions, and continued presence in public life keep him among Pakistan’s best‑known cricketers of his generation.
