Shravan Rathod Biography

Shravan Kumar Rathod was an Indian music director best known as half of the composer duo Nadeem–Shravan. Across a career spanning several decades he helped

Early life and background

Shravan Kumar Rathod was born on 13 November 1954 in Sirohi, Rajasthan, and grew up in a family steeped in classical music. His father, Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod, was recognized for his work in the Dhrupad and Dhamar traditions, and Shravan began learning musical instruments and training under his father from a young age. The musical environment at home included his brothers Roop Kumar Rathod and Vinod Rathod, both of whom also pursued careers in the Indian music industry.

Career

Shravan’s professional life in film music began in the mid-1970s. His earliest credited work was composing for the Bhojpuri film Dangal (1975). He later entered Bollywood with music for the film Anmol Sitare (1982), and in 1985 he released a commercial music project called Star Ten.

In the early 1970s Shravan teamed with Nadeem Saifi to form the composer duo Nadeem–Shravan. Their partnership produced a steady output for many years and became particularly prominent after the duo composed the soundtrack for the 1990 romantic-drama film Aashiqui. That album became a major commercial success and dramatically raised their profile. Over the following decade and a half, Nadeem–Shravan composed music for more than 150 films.

The duo earned repeated industry recognition, receiving Filmfare Awards for Best Music Director for Aashiqui (1991), Saajan (1992), Deewana (1993) and Raja Hindustani (1997). They also won Screen Awards for Raja Hindustani (1997) and Pardes (1998), and a Zee Cine Award for Raaz (2003). Their work on the 2002 film Raaz received notable international attention when it was singled out by English musician Paul McCartney.

By 2005 Nadeem–Shravan had ended their longstanding partnership. Following the split, Shravan focused more on supporting his family’s musical pursuits; he moved into film production and devoted energy to helping launch his sons’ careers as music composers.

Public profile

Shravan was known for combining traditional Indian instruments such as bansuri, sitar and shehnai into his film compositions. Colleagues and listeners often noted his spiritual approach to music; he maintained a daily meditation practice and described music as a constant presence in his subconscious.

Family and personal life

Shravan was married and the father of at least two sons, Sanjeev and Darshan Rathod, both of whom followed him into music composition. His father’s influence and the musical careers of his brothers Roop Kumar and Vinod reinforced the family’s multi-generational presence in Indian playback and film music.

Later years and death

In April 2021 Shravan Rathod tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim, Mumbai. He died on 22 April 2021 in Mumbai after suffering a cardiac arrest and multiple organ failures. He was 66 at the time of his passing. His son Sanjeev confirmed his death and noted that other family members were also dealing with COVID-19 at that time.

Legacy

Shravan’s best-remembered work remains the body of songs he created with Nadeem–Shravan, particularly the Aashiqui soundtrack, which helped define the sound of Hindi film romance in the 1990s. His combination of classical influences and popular melody, along with a long list of award-winning scores, ensured his place among prominent music directors of his era.
