Shreegauri Sawant (Gauri Sawant) Biography

Shreegauri "Gauri" Sawant is an Indian transgender activist from Pune, Maharashtra. A director of the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust, she has campaigned for the

Early life and background

Shreegauri Sawant was born on 22 July 1980 in Bhavani Peth, Pune, Maharashtra. Assigned the name Ganesh Suresh Sawant at birth, she is the second child in a Marathi family and grew up with an elder sister. Her mother died when she was seven, and her father worked as a police officer.

From childhood Gauri felt different from the gender expectations around her. She preferred playing house games with girls, avoided stereotypically masculine sports, and experienced family pressure and ridicule because of her feminine mannerisms. Those tensions eventually led her to leave home as a teenager; at 17 she travelled to Mumbai with very little money and began building an independent life.

Career

In Mumbai, Gauri connected with members of the local LGBTQ community and social workers at Humsafar Trust. Influenced by meetings with activists and mentors, she adopted the name Gauri and embraced an identity as a hijra/third gender person. Encouraged to organise for her community, she founded the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust (also known as Aajicha Ghar) in 2002 and became its director.

Under Gauri’s leadership the trust partnered with the Mumbai District AIDS Control Society to run outreach for sex workers and transgender people. The organisation has provided HIV testing camps, free condoms and public-awareness activities aimed at improving health access and social understanding.

Gauri has been active on multiple fronts to secure legal and civic rights for transgender people. She filed an affidavit in 2009 seeking legal recognition for transgender Indians; that work progressed through support from NGOs and the National Legal Services Authority and contributed to the wider movement that culminated in legal changes at the national level. In 2014 she petitioned the Supreme Court for the right of transgender people to adopt. She has also worked to help transgender people obtain identity documents and other basic civil records after many were left without birth or residence papers.

Beyond legal advocacy, Gauri has focussed on direct care and shelter. She has helped provide refuge to transgender people abandoned by family and has worked on HIV-related welfare after the death of her adopted daughter’s biological mother from AIDS. Gauri has also been involved in animal-welfare activities.

Public profile

Gauri’s personal story drew widespread public attention when she adopted a child in 2008. She took in Gayatri, whose biological mother died of AIDS; Gayatri’s grandmother had been pressured to sell the girl, and Gauri intervened to provide a safer alternative. The adoption drew criticism at the time because Gauri is transgender, but it also changed many people’s perceptions when the relationship between mother and child became public. Gayatri has pursued medical studies and lives in a hostel.

Her adoption story reached an even larger audience when it was featured in a 2017 YouTube video titled “Vicks–Generations of Care,” which significantly raised Gauri’s public recognition. That same year she appeared on the Hindi television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati as a guest contestant alongside singer Usha Uthup, who Gauri has cited as a long-time favourite.

Gauri has been invited to speak at TEDx events, has authored the book Manav Sansadhan Vikas, and has been the subject of a biography by Rhythm Wagholikar titled Gauri The Urge To Fly. She has also hosted a season of the Marathi talk show Gharo Ghari Matichya Chuli on TV9 Marathi. In 2019 she was appointed one of Maharashtra’s election ambassadors, becoming the first transgender person in India to hold that role; in that capacity she emphasised the importance of broader civic participation including among sex workers and transgender people.

Latest updates

Gauri continues to direct the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust and to represent transgender interests in civic and legal forums. Her public role includes advocacy, outreach, media appearances and speaking engagements, and she remains a visible figure in efforts to expand rights and services for transgender and marginalized communities.
