Early life and background

Shreya Ghoshal was born on 12 March 1984 in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, into a Bengali Hindu family. Although her birthplace is in West Bengal, she was raised in Rawatbhata, Rajasthan, where her father worked. Her father, Bishwajit (also presented as Vishwajit) Ghoshal, worked as an electrical engineer for the Nuclear Power Corporation, and her mother, Sarmistha (also presented as Sharmishtha) Ghoshal, is a postgraduate who sang and played harmonium at home. Shreya has a brother named Soumyadeep Ghoshal.

From a very young age Shreya was immersed in music. She began formal musical lessons at age four and received early classical training from her mother, who Shreya considers her first teacher. By six she had started training in classical music more formally and later studied under Padma Shri awardees Kalyan Ji Bhai and Mukta Bhide for a period. Her schooling began at Atomic Central School in Rawatbhata; the family later relocated to Mumbai where she continued her education. She enrolled at Atomic Energy Junior College for science studies before shifting to SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce in Sion, Mumbai, where she completed a graduate degree.

Career

Shreya’s public singing journey began in childhood. She gave her first stage performance at age six during a club function and went on to win the India Live Vocal Competition organized by Sangam Kala Group in Delhi in 1995. In 1998 she recorded her first Bengali album and also performed religious songs.

A major turning point came in 2000 when she participated in Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Child Special, a competition that brought her national attention. Her performances on the show, which at the time was hosted by Sonu Nigam, earned widespread praise and she emerged as the winner.

Following the television success, Shreya moved into playback singing. Her debut work in films includes a Tamil song in Yen Chellam (2002) and her Bollywood debut was marked by the song Dhola Re Dhola from the 2002 film Devdas. Over the years she has recorded songs across multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi and Malayalam, and became particularly well known for both romantic numbers and more uptempo, item-style songs.
