Early life and background

Shreeram Lagoo was born on 16 November 1927 in Satara, Maharashtra. He attended Bhave School in Pune and went on to study at Fergusson College before enrolling at B. J. Medical College, Pune, where he completed his medical degrees (MBBS and MS). Although he trained and qualified as an ear, nose and throat surgeon and practiced medicine in Pune for six years, his interest in the theatre developed while he was a student and set him on a parallel path as a performing artist.

Career

Lagoo made his screen debut in the 1971 film Aahat - Ek Ajeeb Kahani and had earlier established himself on the Marathi stage, with notable early work that included the play Vedyache Ghar Unhat. Over the course of a long career he appeared in more than 100 Hindi and Marathi films and acted in over 40 plays spanning Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati theatre. He also directed more than 20 Marathi productions.

He was active on television as well, with one of his TV appearances recorded in the series Thhoda Sa Aasman (1995). Internationally, he appeared in the feature film Gandhi alongside Ben Kingsley.

Lagoo worked with many leading figures of Marathi theatre and cinema. He and fellow actor Nilu Phule collaborated on several Marathi films, including Sinhasan, Saamna and Pinjra. His breadth of work on stage and screen led many to regard him as one of the foremost actors of the Marathi stage.

In addition to his acting career, Lagoo maintained his scientific training and professional background as a former practitioner of medicine. He was known for personal habits such as abstaining from smoking and alcohol, and he listed reading and listening to classical music among his interests. He identified as an atheist.

Death and legacy

Lagoo died on 17 November 2019 at his residence in Pune, at the age of 92. The reported cause of death was cardiac arrest. His long body of work across theatre, film and television, and his contributions as a director in Marathi theatre, remain central to his reputation.
