Shruti Choudhry was born on 3 October 1975 in New Delhi and raised in a family with a long history in Indian politics. She attended Convent of Jesus & Mary and later Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, before pursuing higher education in the UK and India. She studied at an institution in Oxford in 1994, completed a BA at Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi in 1997, and earned an LL.B. from B. R. Ambedkar University, Agra in 2000.

Her family includes prominent political figures. Her father, Surender Singh, served as a Member of Parliament for the same Bhiwani–Mahendragarh seat in the late 1990s and died in 2005. Her mother, Kiran Choudhry, is also active in politics. Shruti identifies with the Jat community and follows Hinduism. She lists reading and travelling among her personal interests.

Career

After completing her legal studies, Shruti Choudhry practised law with the firm Karanjewala & Co. before entering electoral politics. She succeeded in the 2009 general election, winning the Bhiwani–Mahendragarh Lok Sabha constituency as a candidate of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 55,097 votes over her nearest rival.

During her term in the 15th Lok Sabha she served on several parliamentary committees. In December 2009 she became a member of the Committee on Agriculture, in March 2010 she joined the Committee on Empowerment of Women, and in May 2013 she took up duties on the Committee on Public Undertakings. She was also part of the Indian delegation to the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where she participated in discussions on globalization, interdependence and development.

Shruti contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from the same constituency but did not retain the seat.
