Early life and backgroundShruti Sharma was born in Dhampur, Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up with roots in the same town. She comes from a family with a strong professional tradition: several relatives pursued medicine and engineering. Her father, Sunil Dutt Sharma, is an architect who runs a construction consultancy firm in Delhi and is involved with a local school in his native village. Her mother, Rachna Sharma, worked as a teacher. Shruti also has a brother who plays cricket at the under‑25 level for Uttar Pradesh.
Shruti completed her schooling with active participation in student leadership and cultural activities. During her school years she served as secretary of cultural affairs and helped organise events. At college she took part in competitive debating across formats, including parliamentary and conventional styles.
Education
Shruti graduated in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and went on to pursue postgraduate studies in sociology at the Delhi School of Economics. She was undertaking postgraduate work at Jawaharlal Nehru University when she learned about Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy (RCA) for Civil Services preparation and later joined the programme to prepare for the UPSC examination.
Career
Shruti Sharma is an Indian Administrative Service officer by profession. She achieved national recognition after securing the top rank in the 2021 UPSC Civil Services Examination, scoring 1105 out of 2025 marks. This success came on her second attempt at the exam. In her first attempt she encountered an issue with the medium of instruction during mains that resulted in her taking the paper in Hindi and missing the interview shortlist by a single mark.
Her chosen optional subject for the UPSC mains was History. She credited the coaching and support she received at Jamia Millia Islamia’s RCA as a key factor in her achievement. In mock interviews and public comments she has described motivations for joining the civil services that include a desire to give back to society and the appeal of learning and personal growth that government service offers.
Public profile
Shruti has interests beyond academics and administration. She is an enthusiastic viewer of world cinema, including Iranian and Hong Kong films, and has made efforts to learn languages such as Urdu. In interviews she has mentioned poets Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena and Dushyant Kumar among her favourites.
Her 2021 achievement also formed part of a notable UPSC outcome: the top three ranks that year were held by women. Media coverage at the time highlighted the prominence of that result when the UPSC toppers list was released on 28 May 2022.
Family and influences
Shruti’s family background includes several members in medical and engineering professions. Her maternal lineage featured a desire for civil service attainment; her maternal grandmother revealed that she had hoped Shruti’s mother would pursue the Civil Services, but limited access to coaching in a rural setting made that difficult. Shruti’s own path into the services can be seen as fulfilling a family aspiration to engage in public service and education.
