Early life and background

Shubham Gupta was born on 11 August 1993 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He spent his early years in Jaipur before his family moved to Dahanu in Maharashtra when he was in class 7. That move was prompted by financial pressures faced by the family. For schooling, he and his sister were enrolled at Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul, Chala, Vapi, Gujarat, which required long-distance travel by train between home and school.

Growing up in a middle-class household, Gupta helped his father in a small shoe shop in Maharashtra after school. Even while assisting in the family business, he stayed committed to his studies, often carrying books to the shop and studying whenever time allowed. After finishing his postgraduate studies, Gupta began attempting the UPSC civil services examinations. His first appearance at the preliminary level was in 2015, which he did not clear. He tried again in 2016 and succeeded across prelims, mains, and interview, receiving an All India Rank of 366. That result initially placed him with the Indian Audit and Accounts Services, where he underwent officer training.

While in training at the National Academy of Audit and Accounts in Shimla, Gupta made another attempt at the UPSC exams in 2017 but did not clear them that year. During December 2018 to August 2019 he served as an Assistant Accountant General in Jaipur.

Gupta’s persistence paid off in 2018 when he took the UPSC exam for the fourth time and secured All India Rank 6. He chose Law as his optional subject and took the exams in English. Following that success he was assigned to the Maharashtra cadre of the 2019 IAS batch and attended the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie for training.

As of 2020 and into 2021, Gupta is serving as Assistant Collector at Nashik for the Government of Maharashtra.
