Early life and background

Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab. He grew up in a family with agricultural roots and spent his early years in his hometown before moving with his family to Mohali so he could pursue cricket more seriously. Gill attended Manav Mangal Smart School in Mohali and began attracting attention as a boy for his prodigious run-scoring in youth competitions.

From a very young age he played with local children and practised with makeshift equipment; those formative years produced eye-catching totals at district and state levels. His performances at Under-16 level were particularly notable, including a season in which he compiled several very large scores and earned the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy as India’s best under-16 cricketer for 2013–14.

Career

A right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm off break bowler, Gill progressed through Punjab’s age-group teams before making his List A debut in 2017. He represented India at Under-19 level, where he was a prolific run-scorer and served as vice-captain of the 2018 Under-19 World Cup squad.

Gill’s domestic career includes representing Punjab in first-class and List A cricket. In the Indian Premier League, he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 and later joined Gujarat Titans in 2022. He also spent a season with Glamorgan in county cricket.

Internationally, Gill made his ODI debut on 31 January 2019 against New Zealand. He played his first Test match on 26 December 2020 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and debuted in T20 internationals on 3 January 2023 at Wankhede Stadium against Sri Lanka. He wears jersey number 77 for India and number 7 for Gujarat Titans.

Gill established several age‑group and senior records early in his career. As a teenager he scored massive totals in district and state Under-16 competitions, and he became one of Punjab’s youngest players to score a first‑class century. His ODI achievements include reaching 2,000 runs in fewer innings than any other cricketer and becoming the youngest player to score a double century in an ODI.

The 2023 IPL season was a breakthrough in franchise cricket: Gill topped the run charts and won the Orange Cap after accumulating 890 runs in 17 matches for Gujarat Titans. He was also recognised as the tournament’s Gamechanger and Most Valuable Player. That same year he recorded the highest individual T20I score by an Indian, and his performances across formats earned him ICC Player of the Month awards in January and September 2023.

At international level he featured in the World Test Championship final and took part in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, where he finished as one of his team’s leading run-scorers. His consistency in white-ball cricket propelled him to the top of the ICC Men’s ODI batting rankings in November 2023.

In recognition of his contributions, Gill received the ODI Batter of the Year and International Cricketer of the Year awards in 2022, and the Polly Umrigar Award for best men’s cricketer of the year in 2024.
