Shushila Likmabam Biography

Indian judoka Shushila Devi Likmabam rose from Imphal to the global judo stage, winning a Commonwealth silver in 2014 and representing India as the sole jū

Early life and background

Shushila Devi Likmabam was born on 1 February 1995 in Imphal, Manipur. She grew up in a family closely connected to judo: her uncle, Likmabam Dinit, was an international-level practitioner who helped introduce her to the sport. By the age of seven she was training at a local judo academy, often travelling with her elder brother for early morning practice sessions.

Her parents are Likmabam Manihar Singh and Likmabam Chaobi Devi. Shushila has an elder brother, Shilakshi Singh, and two younger siblings. She attended more advanced training at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala beginning in 2010 to develop her technique and competition readiness.

Career

Shushila made her international competitive debut at the 2010 Commonwealth Judo Championship in Singapore, competing in the 44 kg division and winning gold. From 2010 until 2017 she trained under coach Jiwan Sharma, a partnership that carried her through several key events in the following years.

Her first major breakthrough on a multi-sport stage came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she reached the podium with a silver medal. She continued to compete on the Asian and international circuit, taking silver at the 2018 Asian Open in Hong Kong and following that with a gold at the same event in 2019.

Shushila also contested Grand Slam and qualifying events on the world tour. An incident in Osaka during a 2019 Grand Slam highlighted the challenges athletes can face while competing abroad: unfamiliar announcements and logistical issues resulted in her missing a call and the bout that followed.

Injuries and setbacks have been part of her journey. A hamstring injury prevented her from participating in the qualifying rounds for the 2018 Asian Games and had broader consequences for sponsorship and finances. Despite these difficulties, she secured qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics via the continental quota, becoming India’s sole judo representative at those Games.

Public profile

Shushila’s physical profile is publicly listed as approximately 1.58 m (5 ft 2 in) in height and competing in the 48 kg weight class. She is known for her competitive record at Commonwealth and Asian Open events and for being one of India’s prominent female judokas from Manipur.

Outside competitive results, Shushila joined the Manipur Police in 2017. She has spoken about the financial pressures athletes face, including taking loans and selling personal assets to continue training and competing when sponsorship support waned.

Latest updates

Shushila qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as India’s lone judoka through the continental quota and represented the country at the Games. In the years before Tokyo she continued to collect medals on the Asian Open circuit, including silver in Hong Kong in 2018 and gold there in 2019.

Her coaching relationship with Jiwan Sharma and early guidance from her uncle remain notable parts of her development as an athlete, and she continues to be associated with the judo community in Manipur and nationally.
