Early life and background

Shweta Basu Prasad was born on 11 January 1991 in Jamshedpur (then in Bihar, now in Jharkhand). She grew up in a family with strong ties to the arts: her father worked in theatre and her mother pursued Indian classical music. The family later relocated to Mumbai, where Shweta attended R. N. Podar School in Santacruz West.

She pursued higher education through distance learning at Sikkim Manipal University, completing a graduation in Mass Media, Arts and Journalism in 2014. She also took a film appreciation course from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

Career

Shweta began her career as a child actor on television and moved into films at a young age. Her earliest screen work included a role on the Zee TV series X Zone in 1998. In 2002 she gained national recognition for her lead child role in the Hindi film Makdee, for which she received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist.

Following Makdee, she appeared in several notable Hindi films, including Iqbal (2005), for which she received critical accolades, and completed work on other projects such as Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! (2005) and Darna Zaroori Hai (2006) before taking a break to focus on her studies. In 2007 she adopted her mother’s surname and began using the name Shweta Basu Prasad professionally.

Over the next decade she expanded her body of work across languages and formats. She acted in Bengali and Tamil films, and appeared in multiple Telugu films including Ride (2009), Kasko (2009), Priyudu (2011) and Vijetha (2018). She also worked in television as a lead actor and took roles in web series and short films.

Her later screen credits include a supporting role in Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), the part of Nandini Maurya in the Star Plus television series Chandra Nandini (2017), and appearances in films such as Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2018), The Tashkent Files (2019), Shukranu (2020), Serious Men (2020) and Comedy Couple (2020). On digital platforms she featured in series including Hostages (2019), Dr Donn (2020), High (2020), Ray (2021) and Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach (2022).

Behind the camera and entrepreneurial work

Shweta has worked behind the camera as well, serving as an assistant director to Anurag Basu on the 2016 short film Madly (segment: "Clean Shaven"). In 2015 she joined Phantom Studios in Mumbai as a script consultant and later wrote columns for The Indian Express.

Beyond film and television she launched an interiors business called Interiors by Shweta Basu Prasad and has been involved in documentary work, including the Hindi documentary Roots begun in 2012 that featured several prominent musicians and filmmakers.
