Shyam Charan Murmu was born on 1 April 1958 in Pahadpur village, Badampahar, in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. He belonged to the Santhal scheduled tribe and grew up in the same region that would remain central to his life and family. His eyes and hair were black, and he was raised in a household and community rooted in rural Mayurbhanj.

Career

Murmu pursued a career in banking. He worked with the Bank of India and served as an office bearer in the bank's Odisha unit. During his job he was posted to Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj, where he settled with his family. His work in banking and local postings tied him closely to the communities of his home district.

Personal life and family

While studying in Bhubaneswar, Shyam Charan met Droupadi, who later became his wife. The couple married in 1980. Droupadi Murmu went on to a career that combined education, administrative roles and active politics, but in earlier years she worked as a teacher and as a junior assistant in Odisha government departments.

Shyam Charan and Droupadi had four children: two sons and two daughters. Their family suffered repeated tragedies. Their younger daughter died in 1984, and both sons predeceased their father—Laxman Murmu died on 25 October 2010 and Sipun Murmu died on 2 January 2013. One daughter, Itishree Murmu, worked at a bank. Following these losses, Droupadi Murmu converted the family home in Pahadpur into a residential school named SLS (Shyam, Laxman & Sipun) Memorial Residential School, in memory of her husband and two sons; the school includes a memorial to them.

Shyam Charan Murmu died on 1 August 2014 at the age of 56. The reported cause of death was cardiac arrest. His death came after the family had endured the earlier deaths of two of their children, events that his wife has said left the household devastated.
