Career

Siddaramaiah’s political career spans several decades and multiple parties. He began in the late 1970s with the Bharatiya Lok Dal and later joined the Janata Party. Over time he held roles in Janata Dal and Janata Dal (Secular) before joining the Indian National Congress in 2005.

He entered electoral politics as an independent candidate, winning the Chamundeshwari assembly seat in 1983 and again during mid-polls in 1985, the latter on a Janata Party ticket. Early ministerial responsibilities included Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, and under Ramakrishna Hegde’s government he worked with portfolios such as Sericulture, Animal Husbandry and Transport.

Siddaramaiah served as Secretary General of Janata Dal in the early 1990s and won the Chamundeshwari seat in 1994 on a Janata Dal ticket, becoming Finance Minister in H. D. Deve Gowda’s government. He later served as Deputy Chief Minister under J. H. Patel in 1996 but was removed from that post in 1999 following intra-party splits. After a period in JD(S) leadership, he joined the Congress in 2005.

On rejoining electoral politics with Congress, Siddaramaiah won the Chamundeshwari bypoll in December 2006 and moved to the Varuna constituency in 2008, where he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He rose to become Leader of the Opposition in 2009 and, after re-election in 2013, was chosen as leader of the Congress legislative party and sworn in as Chief Minister of Karnataka on 13 May 2013.

He contested multiple seats in 2018, winning Badami, and resigned as Chief Minister in May 2018. He served again as Leader of the Opposition between October 2019 and May 2023. In the 2023 state election he returned to the Varuna constituency, won the seat, and was sworn in as Chief Minister of Karnataka for a second time on 20 May 2023.
