Early life and background

Siddharth Roy Kapur was born on 2 August 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in the city that later became the centre of his professional life, he completed his schooling at G.D. Somani Memorial School. He went on to study commerce at Sydenham College and then earned a Masters in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Mumbai.

Kapur grew up in a family with strong ties to the arts and entertainment world. His paternal grandfather worked as a film producer, while his maternal grandparents taught ballroom and Latin American dance. He is the eldest of three brothers; his younger brothers are actors Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunaal Roy Kapur.

Career

Kapur started his career after an early internship at a small production house in Mumbai. With a management degree in hand, he began as a brand manager at Procter & Gamble. He then joined the Star network where he worked in strategic planning and marketing, including a role on the launch marketing for the reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati. During his time at Star he participated in an executive development program in Hong Kong and rose to become one of the youngest Vice Presidents at the company in 2002.

In 2005 Kapur moved into film industry marketing when he joined UTV Motion Pictures as Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications. He led marketing efforts on notable projects such as Rang De Basanti and Khosla Ka Ghosla. In January 2008 he became CEO of UTV Motion Pictures. In that leadership role he oversaw the production of a number of commercially successful and critically acclaimed films including Taare Zameen Par, Jodhaa Akbar, Fashion, Paan Singh Tomar, Kai Po Che, The Lunchbox and Chennai Express.

Kapur’s tenure at UTV and subsequent roles brought wider recognition. In 2014 he assumed the position of Managing Director for Disney India. After nearly a decade in senior studio roles, he left Disney in 2017 to found his own production company, Roy Kapur Films.
