Early life and background

Sift Kaur Samra was born on 9 September 2001 in Faridkot, Punjab. She grew up in an agricultural family; both of her parents, Pawandeep Singh and Ramnik Kaur, are involved in the rice shelling business. She has a younger brother and spent her early years in her hometown where she attended Dasmesh Public School.

Samra took an interest in shooting at a young age after being introduced to the sport by a cousin who is a shotgun shooter. She began practising with 10-metre rifle events around 2016–17. Alongside her sporting pursuits, she pursued higher education at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar and completed a Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports in 2023. She also cleared the NEET examination in 2022 and briefly enrolled in MBBS at GGS Medical College in Faridkot before deciding to focus on her shooting career.

Career

Samra is a competitive sports shooter who has progressed steadily through national and international events. Early national success included multiple medals at the 2019 National Shooting Championships in Bhopal, where she won a set of medals across events. The following year she added a bronze at the Khelo India Shooting Championships in Assam.

From 2022 onward Samra began to make her mark internationally. She won gold at the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany in June 2022. That year she also earned a gold at the National Games and secured a bronze medal in her debut at the ISSF World Cup in the 50m rifle three positions event. Domestically, 2022 brought further success with a gold at the 65th National Shooting Championships in Kerala and another gold at the 36th National Shooting Championships in Gujarat.

International multi-sport competitions in 2023 further elevated her profile. In August she won a gold medal at the 31st World University Games in Chengdu. In September 2023, at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Samra delivered the performance that brought her widespread attention: she won the individual gold medal in the Women’s 50 metre rifle three positions and set a new world and Asian record in the process. She finished the final with a total of 469.6 points, posting strong series in kneeling, prone and standing. At the same Games she also contributed to a silver medal in the team event for the same discipline.
