Early life and backgroundSikandar Raza Butt was born on 24 April 1986 in Sialkot, Pakistan. He attended Pakistan Air Force College in Lower Topa and later earned a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Glasgow Caledonian University. Raised in a family with connections to cricket, Raza developed an early interest in the game through his father and uncles. In 2002 he and his family relocated to Zimbabwe, and after several years playing at the amateur level he obtained Zimbabwean citizenship in 2011, clearing the way for selection to the national side.
Career
Raza is an all-round cricketer who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm off-spin. He made his international ODI debut for Zimbabwe on 3 May 2013 against Bangladesh at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, and his T20 debut shortly after on 13 May 2013 against the same opposition at the same ground. His Test debut came on 3 September 2013 against Pakistan at Harare Sports Club, where he contributed a half-century.
Over his career Raza has been a regular presence across formats for Zimbabwe and has appeared in franchise competitions including the Afghanistan Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League and Pakistan’s domestic leagues. He has represented Zimbabwe against opposition such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
Raza has compiled notable individual and partnership records for Zimbabwe. In July 2014 he shared a 224-run opening stand with Hamilton Masakadza against Afghanistan at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, contributing 141 runs to that total. He gained wider recognition in 2017 following an ODI series victory over Sri Lanka, finishing the final match unbeaten with the bat and taking three wickets.
His performances in the 2018 ICC World Cup Qualifiers earned him Player of the Tournament honours after scoring 319 runs and taking 15 wickets. By March 2020 he had reached 100 ODI appearances. In August 2022 he produced a run of form that included back-to-back unbeaten centuries in a three-match series against Bangladesh and that same month he became the first Zimbabwean to be named ICC ODI Player of the Month.
Raza has also established several records within Zimbabwean cricket: he is the first Zimbabwean to score three centuries in ODI run chases, the only Zimbabwean with two consecutive centuries in ODI run chases as of 2022, and one of four Zimbabwean players to score three ODI centuries in a calendar year. He is the highest-scoring Zimbabwean in T20 World Cup play and was the first from his country to accumulate 600 T20 runs in a single calendar year.
Public profile
Physically, Raza is listed at about 180 cm (5'11") and 70 kg (154 lbs), with light brown eyes and black hair. He wears jersey number 24 for Zimbabwe. Off the field he has been associated with brands and management: he is represented by Stem Sports and Lifestyle Management Agency and has served as a brand ambassador for companies including Splash Zimbabwe, Shrey Sports, The Country Club and PUMA South Africa.
Personal life
Raza is married and has two children. His father, Tasadaq Hussain Raza, runs a motor parts business; his younger brother is named Taymoor Raza Butt. Raza’s early ambitions included becoming a fighter pilot, and he was selected for study at a Pakistan Air Force boarding school, though he did not clear the final medical test.
Challenges and incidents
In April 2021 Raza experienced severe right-arm pain and was diagnosed with an infection in the bone marrow; later reports that the condition was cancer were unfounded. On the field, he was sanctioned in 2016 for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during a T20 match in Bulawayo and was fined and penalised with demerit points.
