Simi Garewal Biography
Simrita "Simi" Garewal is an Indian actor, director, producer and television host known for her white-clad elegance and long-running English-language talk쇼
Early life and backgroundSimrita Garewal, known professionally as Simi Garewal, was born on 17 October 1947 in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. Within a few months of her birth her family moved to the United Kingdom, and she spent part of her childhood there. She attended Newland High School in London. A childhood viewing of the Hindi film Awaara awakened her interest in acting, and as a teenager she pushed for a career in films despite initial resistance from her parents.
After returning to India with her mother and sister, Garewal pursued formal training at the Filmalaya Acting School in Mumbai and began auditioning for roles in Hindi cinema. Early rejections for her Western looks gave way to steady work in the 1960s and beyond.
Career
Garewal made her screen debut as a child actor in early 1960s films and went on to establish herself as a presence in Hindi cinema. Her acting credits include Raaz Ki Baat (1962), Do Badan (1966), Saathi (1968), Mera Naam Joker (1970), Kabhi Kabhie (1976) and Karz (1980). She also appeared in the Bengali films Aranyer Din Ratri (1970) and Padatik (1973).
Alongside acting, Garewal moved into filmmaking and television. She launched a production company, Siga Arts International, in 1983 and worked as producer, director and host on the Doordarshan series It’s a Woman’s World the same year. She directed the Hindi feature Rukhsat (1988) and has written and directed documentary projects, including a three-part series about Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and the 1987 documentary Living Legend Raj Kapoor, to which she also contributed writing.
Garewal became best known to television audiences for presenting English-language talk shows. She hosted and produced Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, which ran for five seasons and 140 episodes on Star World India beginning in 1997. She later hosted Simi Selects India’s Most Desirable (2011) and has continued to present interviews on her self-titled YouTube channel, which she started in 2012.
Accolades and recognition have followed multiple phases of her career. She received Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress in 1966 and 1968, awards for her television hosting in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and later honours including a Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award and other industry recognitions.
Public profile
Garewal has long been a distinctive public figure, known for a carefully cultivated personal style and for popularising candid celebrity interviews in English on Indian television. She has been featured on magazine covers and has made appearances across formats, including a guest-hosting stint on the reality series Bigg Boss in 2023. Her public persona often emphasizes simplicity and the colour white, which she prefers wearing.
Her family background includes a number of military and public-service connections. Her father, Jalawar Singh Garewal, served as a brigadier in the Indian Army; other relatives have held senior positions in the armed forces. Garewal has also spoken publicly about personal experiences that shaped her life, including a near-adoption that did not proceed to completion.
Personal life
Garewal married businessman Ravi Mohan but the marriage lasted 18 months in practice and ended in divorce after a decade of legal separation. She has no children. She is a vegetarian by choice, a dog lover who owns a pet named Chutki, and enjoys baking, snooker and video games in her leisure time. She has said she uses Botox sparingly and drinks wine occasionally at social events.
