Early life and backgroundSimranjit Kaur Baatth was born on 10 July 1995 in Chakar village, Ludhiana, Punjab. Raised in a family with limited means, she grew up in an environment where sport became a route to opportunity. Her elder sister’s involvement in boxing encouraged their mother to support Simranjit’s entry into the sport. At about 15 she joined the Sher-E-Punjab Sports Academy in Chakar and began formal boxing training under coach Ramanand.
She attended Chandigarh University and, as of 2020, was pursuing her graduation. Family responsibilities became significant after the death of her father, Kamal Jeet Singh, in 2018; following his passing the family relied on Simranjit’s earnings while her elder sister, Sonia Kaur, worked with the Border Security Force. She has two younger brothers, Golu Batth and Akash Deep Singh Batth, who were still studying as of 2020.
Career
Simranjit’s amateur boxing career began around 2010 and progressed through junior and national events before she emerged on the international stage. Early successes include medals at junior national championships and a bronze at the Youth World Championship in 2013 in the 60 kg category. She also won medals at national senior level tournaments and at senior international events in Kazakhstan.
2018 was a breakthrough year: Simranjit won her first international gold at the Ahmet Comert International Tournament in Istanbul in the 64 kg class and later claimed a bronze at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi. Her strong run continued with a gold at the 23rd President’s Cup in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, in 2019 and a silver at the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok the same year.
In March 2020 she earned a silver at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Amman, Jordan, securing qualification for the Tokyo Olympics (postponed to 2021). She has competed across multiple weight divisions, including 57–64 kg and 60–64 kg classes, and was ranked world No. 6 by AIBA in 2020. Her domestic achievements include being named Best Boxer at the National Women’s Boxing Championship in 2018 and, in recognition of her contributions to sport, receiving the Arjuna Award in 2021.

In 2020 she was actively seeking employment to support her family, having applied to government positions including roles with Punjab Police.
